Research

.Confusions was written in 1974 by Alan Ayckbourn. it is stylised and it deals with common theme of loneliness and relationships and especially change of identity when joining parenthood.
Alan Ayckbourn

Alan Ayckbourn said "I don't think that I've ever been a political writer, but I think I've been a social writer,". He is interested in the world around him even though he genuinely writes about the domestics which had full real emotion and pain, and even violence. He used the elements as subtle message through the use of comedy and theatrical ingenuity.

I believe that the cultural context of the play is that "Women stays at home to look after the cave , whilst men goes out hunting for food for the wife and children"
In this play i think that the character Lucy as postnatal depression due to the way she acts and respond to other people .

what is postnatal depression and how does it link to the play confusion?

postnatal depression does affects women in different ways, it can start at any point of their first year of giving birth can develop suddenly or gradually.

some the symptoms of postnatal depression and how it's linked to the confusion;

  • loss of interest in the world around you and no longer enjoying things that used to give you pleasure. - Lucy doesn't remember her neighbours because she has lost interest in the outside world focusing on her children.
  • problems concentrating and making decisions. - Lucy doesn't take notice of bells because she is focused on her children and not the things around her.
  • These symptoms can affect your day-to-day life and your relationships with your baby, family and friends. - could be the unknown reason why her husband left her and there is a sense of loneliness because she had to do everything on her own.
  • withdrawing from contact with other people. - "whatever he has to say he can say to my face or not at all" she doesnt wanna contact her husband unless he comes to her so she is withdrawing herself from him.
  • losing all sense of time, such as being unaware whether 10 minutes or two hours have passed. - she doesn't realise what the time is especially when she was dressed in her sleeping gown during the day and she says "oh no i didn't get dressed today, that's all"
  • neglecting themselves, such as not washing or changing their clothes. - the quote "i don't think i've got dressed for weeks now . " shows that  she doesn't really care about how she looks since she has to take care of her children.
the symptoms given by the NHS website at;
http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Postnataldepression/Pages/Symptoms.aspx , proves that Lucy just might have postnatal depression becuasue most of the symptons can relate to lucys character.
